Never thought Garmin would be able to keep up with Navigon but its about time someone did. This model with its 3d graphics- a screen that is very easy to read and all the info it has with it is all it says it is -it is worth more than its price for sure.ABT has a good deal on amazon if you can catch one.

4 out of 5 stars Almost GREAT but a bit buggy!!!   September 5, 2010

First, as everybody has commented..the display on this 3790t looks AMAZING! Compare it to ANY other GPS and the difference is almost like Black and White TV in 1956 to today's HDTV! The Display not only looks good it's VERY use-able in any light..even direct sunshine hitting it's screen. I have a top of the line Magellan...you can barely see the screen when it gets very bright out. Anyway, I'd rather talk about a few quirks or negatives as I feel a review should help one decide if the pros of a device out weigh any negatives.

My first major con is that I have only seen the Juntion View screen pop up MAYBE 3 times in over almost 2 weeks of driving. I live in NY and there are a ton of Juntions I have passed thru. The 3790t DOES show lane assist (the arrows which lane to be in for upcoming turns) BUT It simply almost NEVER shows a Juntion view. I actually returned my first unit thinking it was simply defective..it was NOT. So from my experience you are BARELY going to see Juntion view on this unit at least in NY. I have read other reviews that state they see a lot of Juntion Views..but in NY unless I have a second defective unit?...you can almost forget the fact the 3790t HAS Juntion View. As a side note my Magellan shows a Juntion type view at 1,000 times to one vs this unit.

My second con..is more about refinement. This darn GPS is roughly $400 depends on the deal you get. The voice inside my unit SOMETIMES though rarely, will crack. Meaning..if a map is zooming in or or out I have noticed the voice breaks up. This has only happened 2 times in 2 weeks..but in a $400 unit this is unacceptable.

Another CON for me is my first unit froze up the minute I decided to NOT follow the gps's route as I knew a shorter way to go. I had to re boot it..all was well but again...refined?$400 NO!

My last and maybe biggest con is traffic??? WHAT?? This Garmin is telling me there is a ton of traffic on my route YET my radio's traffic report is not mentioning any traffic where the Garmin is telling me it is. Also the Garmin was auto re routing me OFF my route because it THOUGHT there was a ton of traffic coming up. Well..I didn't listen to the Garmin, and there WAS NO traffic where it said it was. On the other hand..one time the 3790t told me all roads were clear..while I was sitting in traffic, barely moving 10mph on 55 mph road. So it has been my experience that the traffic feature is near useless.or at least maybe it's an hour or 2 behind reality. That being said my Magellan's traffic feature was just as useless.

So after all this complaining why do I still give it 4 stars? Well..OVERALL I actually LOVE this unit. OVERALL it picks excellent routes, I like the timing of the voice telling me where next to turn..it is VERY difficult to miss a turn with the 3790t..it's EXCELLENT at guidance. I chose a female New Zealand voice (built in) and it's very refreshing to be able to change voices...as one voice can get monotonous after you own a gps for a long while.

I LOVE the size of the unit..more than as a toy..it's so pocket able a HUGE plus over the other dinosaur gps units out there now. Battery life seems good and overall construction seems high end..except I get a little creeky sound on the small plastic part on the back if I press on it, that also houses the speaker.

The voice quality is AWESOME blows away the Magellans..(I don't know TomTom)..and it's loud as you can stand. Voice Command (YOU speaking to the unit) is near excellent though you may need speak rather loudly or it may just stare at you. :)

I DO love you can even use your voice to choose your CUSTOM favorites. HOWEVER you only get 5 favorites at a time to choose from. If you don't see the one you want..you have to say DOWN..it will scroll down another 5 and another 5 (or it's 4 at a time) don't recall. Eventually you see your favorite..choose the NUMBER next to it..and bam, all by voice you can start navigating. I wish you could SAY the NAME of your favorite(AS in Speech to TEXT)...say you named your favorite Mike's place or whatever you have it named. Instead you need scroll possibly thru 100's of favorites till yours is found VIA voice. Of course you can simply use the screen and type it takes a second actually BUT so much for voice command then.

Lastly one feature common to I think all Garmins which I love is within favorites you can see all the favorites NEAR the one you just went to. My Magellan can not do that..and being I am in sales..this is a WONDERFUL USEFUL feature cause I may have a customer 2 blocks away from where I am and the 3790t will tell me so...which may have skipped my mind otherwise.

To sum up my book (sorry) This is truly a wonderful UNIQUE great gps..with excellent routing..which is why we buy a gps. I just initially wanted to point out some negatives as too often reviews become almost like a TEAM event..meaning I love Garmin..or Panasonic or WHATEVER, Often that clouds being objective..I wanted to be objective here...All in all quirks and all, I think THIS may be your favorite GPS of your lifetime..till the next model improves on his one "somehow" Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars garmin 3790t   September 4, 2010

I love this gps..it is my 3rd garmin. I am not completely satisfied with the bluetooth and having it recognize my phone book (works about 2 out of 10 times). The sound for the bluetooth is less than my 765T that I had. Voice recognition can be amusing but works most of the time. Overall, I love it...very impressed.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it   August 31, 2010

The graphics are great...the maps are good too but there is still some missing information or outdated information in some cases (but very very few and that's to be expected). The only reason why I gave a 3 on the loudness is because of the sound quality - especially while using hands free to make a call. The sound quality of incoming calls is fairly poor.

But, all in all, this product was well worth it. Love it.

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful but it broke   August 27, 2010

I received the 3790T Garmin GPS for my birthday at the end of July. It was beautiful, thin and sleek. The features that it touted were amazing. The picture clarity was impressive. We used the GPS for a trip to Canada and it performed well (minus a few exceptions of it alerting us to traffic congestion, when there was none.) Shortly after that it began to have difficulty turning on. On a trip to a nearby city, I wanted to find alternate routes to my destination, after it finally turned on, it wouldn't recalculate the route in time for me to make the necessary directional changes. The popup ads were terrible, I don't really care for $5.99 all you can eat Sushi. Once those stupid ads popped up, they wouldn't clear from the screen so I could continue navigating (the screen would freeze). After that trip, when I returned home I shut off the GPS and it never turned on again. I tried resetting it, charging it etc., it still wouldn't turn on. What a disappointment. I hadn't even had the GPS for two weeks before it broke. I too had issues with it getting hot, but live someplace that we use the AC year round, so I would turn the AC unit on to the defrost mode and it would cool the GPS unit down. I am disappointed that my new GPS unit failed after only two weeks and I despise the stupid popup ads. I liked the features that this GPS was supposed to offer, but I doubt I will go with another Garmin due to the poor quality.
